Can You Cut a Key Just by the VIN?

Losing your car keys is a stressful experience. You’re going through all the obvious places, backtracking, and trying to remember where you last saw them. You’re also probably worried about theft and who now has a key to your vehicle. While there’s plenty to worry about, Unlock Indy LLC can at least take some worry off your plate by cutting a new car key. Even without the original key, we can use the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to cut a new key. But how, you might ask? Let us explain!

What Does It Mean to Cut a Key?

First off, let’s clarify what we mean by “cutting a key.” This refers to the process of creating a new key that can unlock your car and start its engine. There are two basic kinds of keys for cars: traditional keys that fit into the lock on the door and ignition and keyless entry remotes, which can be programmed to unlock the car and start it.

Why Are We Able to Use the VIN for Newer Vehicles?

In most cases, if you have the VIN of a vehicle, you can get a new traditional key cut without the original. This is because, with the VIN, we can get the key code for your car from the manufacturer. The key code is a series of numbers and letters that tells us how to cut the key so that it matches the lock.

However, things get a bit trickier when it comes to keyless entry remotes or transponder keys. These types of keys have special chips inside them that communicate with your car’s computer. To program a keyless remote or transponder key, we typically need the original key. This means that if you lose your keyless entry remote or transponder key, you’ll likely need to replace the entire unit.

What’s the Challenge with Older Vehicles?

Another factor that can affect whether or not we can cut a key just by the VIN is the vehicle’s age. If your car is very old, it may not have the same locking mechanism or key type as newer models. This can make it more difficult to get a new key cut without the original, even if you have the VIN.

There’s also the issue of security. For obvious reasons, car manufacturers want to ensure that unauthorized persons cannot easily get a key to your car. Therefore, manufacturers often require additional proof of ownership before we can get you a new key.
