So you’ve got the alarm system. You’ve got the dog. But is there something you’re forgetting about home security? Something as simple as the actual lock on the door? That’s right. Your deadbolt is your first line of defense, and arguably the most important, when it comes to household fortitude. Maybe it’s time to consider a change in your locks.

Why Locks are Important

According to data from the FBI, burglaries of residential areas account for 74.5 percent of all burglary offenses, and 60.6 percent of those burglaries are forced entries. Out of the estimated 2.2 million burglaries in 2011, only 6.3 percent of them were failed forced entry attempts.

What is Recommended?

Locksmiths highly recommend a high quality, hardened steel deadbolt combined with a strike plate. The strike plate is also important because it protects the door frame. In most forced entries, it’s the frame that breaks before the door.

They also suggest that residents actually use the locks. Generally, people will only lock the door knob as it is quicker and easier than locking the bolt. The lock on the knob, of course, adds little to no protection against any kind of forceful entry.

It’s also important to check your locks for wear and tear. Over time, locks will begin to lose strength. They become easier to pick or break. Not only that, but older locks increase your chances of locking yourself out due to a faulty mechanism. If you see any rust or tarnish on your locks, it may be time to have them replaced.

Who Can Help?

Most people often only think of locksmiths when they have been locked out of their home or their car, but having a professional come out and change the locks on your home could be the most important and beneficial locksmith service you ever use.
